Top 5 Health and Hygiene Sector Trends - Katy Dillon

What are the most important developments and transformations shaping the future of health and hygiene? The CWA team takes a look.

The health and hygiene industry has continued to grow post-pandemic. New innovations and intelligent solutions are being developed to address the sector’s most prominent challenges, from the fundamentals of everyday care right through to sustainability. Today, we’ll take a look at five of the key trends shaping the health and hygiene sector.

  1. Connected care

Digital health has always faced scale, security, and integration challenges. Now, though, it is building momentum. For example, remote patient monitoring using wearable smart devices provides high-quality data and oversight, alerting patients and their carers to anomalies. Additionally, to improve the access and convenience of healthcare, telehealth and ‘virtual’ care have grown substantially, particularly in regions of low population density. Perhaps most importantly, integrated data systems that encompass all relevant records and information for each patient are being developed. However, access to all of this data does present security concerns, emphasising the need for robust digital security and training.

  1. AI-driven healthcare and wellness

Using artificial intelligence to ingest and process vast quantities of data to identify subtle patterns is one of the most revolutionary possibilities for the health and hygiene industry. From assisting with clinical decision-making to analysing scans, AI tools are being deployed to improve both the quality and efficiency of healthcare. Challenges around security and information verification remain, but the potential is vast.

  1. Sustainability

What was once a minor consideration has become a critical operational factor. Throughout the health and hygiene industry, companies and facilities are actively pursuing sustainability. This includes the fundamentals, such as energy efficiency and water conservation, through to advanced recycling and circularity. From the clinic to the factory, the entire service and supply chain is now being viewed through the sustainability lens.

  1. Advanced infection control

One of the most challenging aspects of clinical operations is mitigating against hospital-acquired infections. This is made ever more challenging by microbial resistance, leading to new innovations in antimicrobial surfaces that use specific materials with intrinsic antimicrobial properties. New sterilisation systems and ‘robots’ are also being employed, improving the overall standard and rate of disinfection. These tools could be supported by algorithmic detection of outbreaks, tracking the potential of an outbreak and predicting its spread in real time, flagging specific wards or patients at risk.

  1. Preventative health

For some time now, one of the key areas of focus for the health industry has been preventative health; encouraging positive habits and lifestyle-driven changes to improve longevity and enhance patient outcomes. Areas like nutrition, exercise, and the avoidance of problematic habits (such as smoking) are complemented by proactive screening programmes, detecting issues earlier. This is likely to remain vital to overall population health, particularly in developed nations with ageing populations.
