Keep the fires burning, not burnt out

Keep the fires burning, not burnt out

If you have any hope of a long creative career you’re going to have to learn how to balance client demands with personal well-being. Every year it seems that more is required in the same (if not less) time. I saw recently that since 2007 the average number of assets required for campaigns has multiplied by twelve. That’s insane when you think about it. And while it’s true that tech has made some tasks more efficient, it’s rare you get to spend that time saved kicking back and relaxing… it just means you get to the next task sooner.

Working within an agency can add an extra ingredient to the pot. It’s great that you get to collaborate on a more diverse mix of work and clients, but ultimately this adds to the number of demands put on you for brilliant ideas as efficiently as possible. Don’t get me wrong… it’s rewarding, but it can also turn into a lot of pressure if you’re not careful.

Holding on to your passion for creativity is really, REALLY important, so to avoid losing this through burnout, setting some boundaries are key.

Focus

There’s just so much choice out there… platforms, tools and trends are all competing for your attention, but you don’t need to follow them all. Find a direction that aligns with your creative goal and stick to it.

Feedback

It’s never nice to have your work criticised, but resilience is essential. When you get feedback that you might not agree with (as long as it’s constructive), try to see it as an opportunity to grow. Even if it feels tough at first it can help you become better at what you do.

Be selective

There’s so much new stuff you could learn about, it’s easy to feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up. Pay attention to the stuff that’s most relevant, and stay informed without being stretched too thin. Take care of your mental and emotional well-being by stepping back when needed and take a moment to re-evaluate what you consume.

In the end, it’s about finding your rhythm and balance. The focus will always be about delivering for clients; but it’s also about managing the demands of the job while nurturing your creativity.
