There has been a recent rise in so-called ‘hipster’ cafes, in particular those transforming an everyday food stuff and offering it to the public in a huge array of styles.

London’s recently opened Cereal Killer Cafe (pictured above) made it acceptable to eat a bowl of cereal at any time of the day, and be proud of it!

“We are obsessed with everything cereal. We sell over 120 different types of cereal from around the world. To create the perfect bowl of cereal you can choose from 30 different varieties of milk and 20 different toppings. To give you the real sugar rush feeling you had when you were a kid come and visit us for breakfast, lunch or dinner in our nostalgic cafe displaying hundreds of pieces of memorabilia from the 80s and 90s for you to feast your eyes on.”

They have made a lot of headlines lately, but whether or not you agree with their pricing structure you can’t deny the appeal in visiting an eatery like this, especially from a design perspective.

Shortly after this came Belfast’s ‘Simply Crispy’, an eatery that celebrates that guilty pleasure of a crisp sandwich:

“Hungry carnivores will love our Beef Mini Chips on Medium Ormo, a bargain at £3.50 (crusts off 50p extra), while veggies might like to try Pickled Onion Space Raiders in a Belfast Bap with a Wotsit side-salad for a mere £5.95. Our piece de resistance is the ‘Inner Ring’ – a slice of Nutty Krust lovingly rolled into a thin sausage then inserted delicately through a series of Tayto Onion Rings, garnished with parsley and crushed Pringles”.

Inspired by these humble foods being transformed into hipster heroes, I asked the CWA studio “If you could take a humble snack and turn it into a cafe, what would you choose?”, and this is what we came up with:

1. Spreadit – Bread & Spread Emporium

Choose from a selection of artisan breads, eat cold, warm or toasted with any number of available spreads from Butters, Jams, Pates, Marmite etc.

2. Doing Porridge

Prison-themed eatery using stark enamelware serves up a selection of porridges with any milk and topping combo.

3. Toast of the Town

Any bread, toasted and topped with any spread and topping such as Baked Beans, Cheese etc.

4. The Jammy Splodger

100’s of Jams from around the world available to have on either bread, yogurt, pudding

5. Crackertack

The largest selection of crackers available in the world, served with your choice of spread, chutney and cheese.

6. Just add soup

Choose a mug (there are 100’s of individual designed ones), followed by one of 1000’s of packet soup flavours from all over the globe… then simply just add water.

7. Anyone 4 nibbles

Twiglets, crisps, peanuts, carrot sticks, dips, pitta bread… choose any four for £4. It’s a poor man’s Mezzé!

8. Buffet the hunger slayer

Recreating a typical party buffet, offering delights such as mini pork pies, cocktail sausages, quiche, whotsits, coleslaw. As much as you can eat for £10… Complete the ‘Buffet Challenge’ and you can eat for free!

9. For your rice only

Rice cakes, Rice pudding, Paella, Risotto, Biryani… if it can be made with rice then you can get it here!

10. In A Pickle

Everything pickled – onions, eggs, cabbage, nuts, herrings, gherkins, peppers, snakes… you name it.

11. Raisin D’être

All different kinds of dried fruit, served pick n’ mix style.

As you can see, as well as our taste buds this really got our creative juices going… Did we miss your favourite everyday snack?
